Break the paycheck into two parts

Calculate regular wages for regular hours, then calculate overtime wages using the applicable overtime rate.

Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × overtime rate

Worked example

At $18/hour with 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours at time and a half, gross pay is $720 + $162 = $882.

Gross pay is not take-home pay

Taxes, insurance, retirement contributions and other deductions may reduce the amount actually received.

Common mistakes

  • Using total hours as regular hours and then adding overtime again.
  • Assuming deductions are included.
  • Using a 1.5 multiplier when a different rule applies.
